News - BARNARDO’S MUSICAL COMES TO TOWN

Centre Stage Theatre will be one of the first theatre groups in Scotland to stage the ‘The Likes of Us’ at The Buccleuch Centre in Langholm from Wednesday, 19 August to Saturday, 22 August 2009 - a rare opportunity to see this musical in its amateur premier year. ‘The Likes of Us’ was written by Rice and Lloyd Webber when they were at college together in 1965. The little known show was their first collaboration and it tells the story of Dr Thomas Barnardo and his campaign to rescue destitute children in 19th century London. Now it has been revived and, depending on its success, may go on to become a professional production. Barnardo’s Scotland will screen a short film before each show. This will illustrate how it no longer runs children’s homes, but still works with young people across Scotland tackling today’s most urgent issues. The Really Useful Group is kindly donating a proportion its share of the box office takings from ‘The Likes of Us’ to Barnardo's until the end of 2010. Sir Tim Rice said: “I'm delighted that the first musical Andrew Lloyd Webber and I wrote together, The Likes Of Us, is being revived a mere 40 years after it was written. I am also very pleased that the show, the story of Dr Thomas Barnardo, will benefit the organisation that he founded to help homeless children in London. “Today Barnardo's still has plenty to do to help deprived children even if the problems they face are not always the same as those encountered by Barnardo himself. If our show, through its partnership with the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, can raise money and the charity's profile, then our first tentative attempt to write a musical can at last be considered a success in a way we never considered back in 1965. But of course we hope the new generation of performers enjoy performing The Likes of Us too.” Martin Crewe, Director of Barnardo’s Scotland added: “We are delighted that this musical has been revived and are sincerely grateful to benefit from its fundraising support. “Even now, more than a hundred years after Dr Barnardo’s death, the charity is still working with some of society’s most disadvantaged and vulnerable children and young people. “We would urge everyone to watch this musical so that they can learn more about the amazing and moving story of such a wonderful man, while encouraging local actors and supporting a worthy cause.” Tickets are available from The Buccleuch Centre box office.
