News - Centre Stage Youth Theatre gains charitable status

THE Langholm-based Centre Stage Youth Theatre has gained charitable status recognising its work in developing creative skills for young people through musical theatre. The group, formed last year by Judith Johnson and Chris Jones for its first production, Little Shop of Horrors, for the Langholm & Eskdale music and arts festival now has more than 40 members, from eight to 25-year-olds. In less than a year Centre Stage has built a strong team of committed volunteers who manage and help run the group. Judith said: “Centre Stage members receive professional training in drama, dance and vocal music, with the main focus on producing a fully-staged musical at the Buccleuch Centre. “The training equips young people to continue their interest in musical drama, while giving them communication skills and discipline that will serve them in whatever area or profession they pursue as a career. “This year’s show, The Likes of Us, was written by Rice and Lloyd Webber and tells the story of Dr Thomas Barnardo and his campaign to rescue destitute children in 19th-century London. “The show provides enormous creative scope for us, with memorable songs and great character parts. “We’re hoping lots of people come to see the musical in August. I believe they’re in for a treat.” Chris said: “We’ve received funding from Awards for All Scotland, Langholm & Eskdale music and arts festival, Xcel Project and other generous sources, which has helped with our training workshops. “Centre Stage is different from many theatre groups because we don’t charge to join. It can cost parents hundreds of pounds a year to send their child to a dance or stage school but we didn’t want any obstacles to stop anyone interested joining Centre Stage. “The costs of staging a musical are high. The scenery, costumes and theatre hire will cost thousands of pounds, which isn’t covered by any funding. However, we’re confident it’ll be a production to remember with the quality of the young cast and professional staging.”
